The Poetry Board - Question 1

Back in my college days I lived in a house with 17 fellow college students for a year (it was a large house). During that time, I got in the habit of writing poems to people. It worked like this: I left a white board out on our apartment door. If you signed your name and wrote me a sentence, I would write a poem back to you for all to see. It was a big hit for a while. I am trying to do the same this year on my blog.

If you are the first person to comment on this post or e-mail me about this request, I will write a poem to you (I’ll only use your initials or less) and post it here on March 7. I will repeat this process sporadically throughout the year.

As an example, I have written a poem to my grandmother Betty (she doesn’t use a computer, so she isn’t in the running in the future):

To Betty Lou:

Oh dear Lou

I began making you a haiku

But dearest Lou

A haiku is too short, too simple to describe you

Because beloved Lou

Those buttered potatoes, canned beans and beef stew

Tasted so good when paired with all the other stuff you’d do

So dear Lou

As we now stand

We still get to walk hand-in hand

And all the times we get to chat

Plus the way you hate our cat

And I’ll cherish our time

You in your golden prime
